05. Megan Estes and Jeanine Chiu. Recipe.

Jeanine and I started by throwing around foods we knew and were familiar with. It didn't take us long to realize that our "default" foods were totally different, as were our comfort foods.

What we settled on, in the end, was a mixture of our comfort foods: a tortellini soup my mother always made in the winter, but with Asian influence.

Ingredients: (Fresh) Pork Tortellini, Tomatoes, Carrots, Potatoes, Celery, Onion, Garlic, Herbs, Worstershire sauce, Soy sauce, Sherry, Pepper. All to taste. Simmered for a few hours, with tortellini (in this case) added shortly before serving to ensure freshness.

What we gained in cooking the food was time getting to know each other, talking about growing up while preparing versions of the foods we'd grown up with. And what we ended up with was a cross-cultural, cross-personal food to talk over, which makes you think about comfort, about family, and about people.

Plus, it tastes totally bomb.

Megan, Jeanine
