I feel as if art used to be an aesthetic piece coming in many forms: painting, sculpture, etc. Somewhere along the road, though, art has become any medium that provides an intentional statement, emotional, political, etc.
Take for example Picasso -- his art went from traditionally beautiful to "modern" art. Art such as his "Three Musicians" seemed to spark a change in art perception, so much so that a signed urinal can pass as art. A regular urinal means nothing, but an intentionally placed one? That's art.
